    What is Threads of Learning?

Threads of Learning has collaboration and unity at its heart.   There are three distinct phases that guide the learning.  It is not about individualism, it is about the power of what a community of learners can achieve together.  Read the whakapapa for the story of how it has developed over many years.

    Ignite invitation

Jody  explains in simple terms how to plan some invitational learning to ignite the new Threads of Learning.

Make contact to arrange a time to have a conversation about planning some ignite invitations for your learners.

    Mangrove

This is a very brief window into work in action as part of a Threads of Learning inquiry cycle.

    Ignite Thinking Routine

Use the Project Zero thinking routine of 'See, Think, Wonder' at any year level to give individual think time and then collective thinking time before co-constructing your question.

    Democratic Process

Simple voting is a way to use a democratic process that learners can understand and participate in very easily.  Keeping the process simple means that learners can become the leaders of this process for Threads of Learning and throughout class life for other purposes.

    Open and Closed Questions

This video touches on the idea of open or closed questions.  Our learners bring both to their learning and we can include both in respectful ways while mostly focussing on deeper thinking.

    Curiosity Table

This video talks about things to think about when adding 'curiosity' to your classroom in an easy and flexible  way.

    Focus Frame

This video talks about some simple ways to use your focus frame (Taiao Viewer) in different learning contexts.  Get a free download of a focus frame from the shop.

    Touchstone

Every year, at Matariki, a word, phrase of whakatauki is launched to be our 'touchstone' for the year.  A touchstone is  something that we come back to throughout the year to keep us connected.

    Matariki community celebration.

The voice is collated and taken back to the teaching team to allow time for discussion and decision making. The selected touchstone is then kept very close until the community launch where ākonga and their whānau along with our wider community hear what the next

    year will entail.

    The three phases

To open possibilities, to light a fire of enthusiasm or motivation for learning. To gather the energy  and bring a breath of life that launches the Threads of Learning focus to come.

To explore important questions with a variety of ways to answer the questions.  To collaborate and be active participants in social constructed learning rather than as individuals.  To find meaningful local problems to solve.

Ākonga are resilient and can use their determination to overcome setbacks and challenges in their learning in the discover phase.

To ask and answer ‘What is worthy to pursue for your community of impact?’

To allow for diversity, creativity and innovation in responses that excite, empower and inform the community of impact.
